Bridport or bust

Had a lie in, then did some more grouting. After that it was time for lunch and off to my crossword group.
This afternoon I worked on my Bridport Prize entries, completing a piece of flash fiction and a poem. Tomorrow I’ll finish the story I’ve been working on for the past few months. I don’t usually enter but having read recent winners, felt I might as well ‘have a go’. Now for an hour in the garden as it’s cooled down a bit.

Good for you for having a go at the Bridport Prize. The standard’s always very high, which has put me off entering in the past (although I always intend to), but why not - you’re a good writer, so go for it! Do you find it hard to write something more ‘literary’ after womag stories (I hope that doesn’t sound patronising – it’s not meant to be but it’s something I struggle with. When you write for the womags you have to write in a certain way, don’t you? Ie: no gory unhappy endings – nothing left too open? Perhaps that’s something you could cover in your Writers Forum column?).
Sorry to hear you’ve not been feeling too good over the past couple of weeks (I always read your blog, but don’t always have time to leave a comment). I agree that you should be protecting yourself from any more hurt and upset so if that means refusing to meet with people, I think that’s the right thing to do! Hope you’ve got good weather up in Leeds too and that you’re feeling a little better.
